Copy of original orderly book of the Continental Army from 20 April to 6 September 1775, kept by John Fenno. This duplicate, with some additions, was made by Joseph Ward, secretary to Gen. Artemas Ward. Most of the book consists of daily general orders: Ward's as commander of the troops in Cambridge until George Washington's arrival on 2 July 1775; and Washington's from his Cambridge headquarters. Order concern courts-martials, discipline, provisioning, enlistments, and military maneuvers. A description of the Battle of Bunker Hill is also included.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
